Note: The drive to Playa Kanoa can be somewhat bumpy, as the road is full of small and large potholes. Therefore, we recommend driving carefully or alternatively choosing a robust rental car like a Jeep. At the same time, a larger car provides enough space for your surfboard and other equipment.

If you want to enjoy absolute peace during your surf session, a trip to Klein Curaçao might be a good idea. This secluded island is located about 15,5 miles southeast of Curaçao. Depending on the route and type of boat, the crossing takes between 60 and 90 minutes. Due to the strong winds around the small island, the waves can be quite high, therefore this surf spot is only recommended for experienced surfers.

All three are considered endangered because they are sometimes traded as illegal wildlife. Therefore, do not touch the sea turtles, do not feed them, and do not swim too close to them. Instead, simply enjoy the underwater spectacle and admire the adorable creatures – from a respectful distance.

An excursion to Playa Grandi is highly recommended, where you are almost guaranteed to see sea turtles. If you prefer snorkeling with trained guides, then a snorkeling tour may be advisable for you.

Many guided tours also take you directly to Playa Grandi where you will have the chance to explore the underwater world. Some tours will also visit Sabana Westpunt. On the return trip, a short stop at the Flamingo Sanctuary Sint Willibrordus is made, where you can make fascinating observations of the majestic birds.

During diving and snorkeling trips in the waters around Curaçao, you can observe various fish species. Typical inhabitants of the Caribbean Sea include angelfish, clownfish, and parrotfish. Dolphins are rarely seen from the shore – though it’s not impossible. With some luck, dolphins have been observed from the coastal restaurants in Pietermaai.

With some luck, you can also see the dolphins from the Jan Thiel Bay. On some days, the staff of the aquarium make a promotional tour there and perform a few tricks with the dolphins.

Originally, they come from the northern countries of South America. Since the animals are quite shy, you might not easily observe them, but you will certainly not miss hearing them.

You will frequently encounter Baltimore orioles on the Caribbean island. The females possess a black-yellow plumage and belong to the starling family. The males, however, have a completely black plumage. As adults, these birds reach a size of about 18 to 20 centimeters.

The Curaçao Flower Bat belongs to the leaf-nosed bat family. This bat species is also known as the southern long-nosed flower bat or the lesser long-nosed flower bat. However, to avoid disturbing them in their natural habitat, you should keep to the distances indicated on the signs. If you have binoculars* with you, you can also watch the flamingos from the wooden footbridge.

You can already see the pink birds from the road from your rental car. A detour to Jan Kok Saline to see the pretty flamingos is therefore also worthwhile for holidaymakers who are not good walkers.

With a bit of luck, you can also spot some flamingos at the salt pans on Jan Thiel Beach. This is not only a popular excursion destination for animal lovers, but the region is also ideal for hiking tours. On the tour, you will not only encounter flamingos, but also other water birds and other native animal species.

The Zoutpannen used to be used for salt production, but are no longer used for this purpose. However, the continued special composition of the water ensures that it shines in shades of pink. Together with the flamingos that live there, it is a popular photo motif.

In the southwest of Curaçao, you will find another place where you can spot flamingos. In contrast to the other spots, this one is less well known. Therefore, you can usually expect far fewer tourists there.

The saltworks, where the wild flamingos live, is located in the middle of a beautiful nature reserve. You will probably need around two hours to walk around the entire salt lake. Conveniently, there is an adjacent main road in the immediate vicinity of the area where you can easily park.

If you are planning a longer excursion, we recommend a jeep tour along the northwest coast of Curaçao.
