Curaçao Beaches in the West
Most beautiful beaches in Curaçao are spread across the western part of the island. In addition to some facts about each beach, you will also learn about possible entrance fees, which beaches are free of charge, and for which activities the beach is particularly suitable.
Beach #1: Grote Knip
The beach Grote Knip, also known as Playa Kenepa Grandi, is located in the northwestern part of Curaçao. You probably already know the beach, as it is a very popular photo motif that is also printed on postcards. Playa Kenepa Grandi is considered particularly natural, delights with crystal clear water, and is referred to by numerous locals and tourists as one of the most beautiful places on the island. You don’t have to pay an entrance fee for Grote Knip, but you can rent a sun lounger or buy a snack at the beach bar for a small fee if needed.
Beach #2: Kleine Knip
The beach Kleine Knip, as the name already suggests, is a small beach directly adjacent to Grote Knip. It is situated in a bay nestled between two cliffs. The water there is very calm and exceptionally clear, allowing snorkel enthusiasts the opportunity to explore the beautiful underwater world. Sunbathing at Kleine Knip, also known as ‘Playa Kenepa Chiki’, is also free of charge. However, you should bring your own refreshments, as there are no restaurants or bars located at the beach.
Beach #3: Playa Grandi
The Playa Grandi is the ideal spot if you want to go snorkeling. In addition to the beautiful coral reef, you will almost certainly be able to discover some sea turtles. The local fishermen discard their leftovers from fishing trips into the sea, attracting the turtles with the scent.
Compared to many other beaches in Curaçao, Playa Grandi is still relatively unknown, so you will encounter only a few other tourists there on most days. However, there are now also occasional bus groups visiting Playa Grandi. Depending on whether your visit coincides with the bus tours, you may have to share the beautiful beach with a few other tourists.
Since the sea turtles at Playa Grandi are already accustomed to humans, you will still be able to see numerous turtles despite occasional larger crowds.
Beach #4: Playa Porto Mari
The Playa Porto Mari is located slightly south of the previous three beaches and is known for its special beach residents. The two friendly pigs are particularly popular with visitors. To enter the beach, you have to pay a small entrance fee of about $3.00. However, the proceeds are mainly used for beach cleaning and animal care. For a meal break in between, you can stop by the adjacent restaurant and choose a delicious local dish.
Beach #5: Playa Cas Abao
In Curaçao, Playa Cas Abao is considered one of the most popular beaches. Due to the coral reef, the beach is popular among divers who want to observe marine life underwater.
To access Playa Cas Abao, you’ll need to pay around $5.50, but this grants you access to a well-equipped beach. In addition to a beach bar, there are also restroom facilities available.
Beach #6: Playa Lagun
The Playa Lagun is surrounded by imposing cliffs on both sides, providing a home for numerous corals and fish. Therefore, the beach is also very popular among divers.
The dive school located directly on-site offers not only introductory courses but also guided diving tours. You don’t have to pay an entrance fee for the beach itself, but you can rent a lounge chair if needed. Of course, you also have the option to bring your own beach mat.
Our recommendation
