Planning Your Trip to Curaçao: Visa Requirements Explained

Symbolic image “Curaçao visa”: An opened passport lies on a table and is stamped with several stamps.

Unlike other Caribbean countries, you do not need to apply for a visa to enter Curaçao as a American citizen. Entry into Curaçao is therefore relatively straightforward. However, there are some documents you must present if you wish to enter.

This particularly includes the Digital Immigration Card, which you should apply for at least seven days before your departure to Curaçao. If you can present this and your valid US passport, you will be able to stay on the island for a continuous period of 180 days per year.

What Documents Do I Need for My Entry into Curaçao?

To enter Curaçao, you must have a (temporary) passport. It is important that this passport is not older than ten years and remains valid throughout your stay. Ideally, your passport should have at least six months of validity left when you travel to Curaçao.

For Peruvian, Turkish, and Cuban nationals, for example, a passport alone is not sufficient. This means that tourists from these countries must present a visa, which they should ideally apply for at least one month before traveling. Therefore, you should definitely check the regulations that apply to your nationality.

In addition to the passport and the Digital Immigration Card, it is also required to present a valid travel health insurance. There are both short-term health insurance options for a few weeks or months abroad as well as long-term options that cover stays of up to five years.

Do I Need a Visa for a Longer Stay in Curaçao?

Yes, from a stay of more than 180 days in Curaçao you usually need a visa, or a special permit if you have US citizenship. Ideally, you should apply for your visa one or two months before you want to visit the Caribbean island.

If you are planning a longer stay or even considering moving to Curaçao permanently, you must apply for a residence permit. Initially, this permit is issued for a maximum period of three years.

A subsequent extension is of course possible. To increase the chances of obtaining a permanent residence permit, you must have lived and worked in Curaçao for at least ten years. However, before you can take up employment in Curaçao, you must apply for a work permit.
